How Odyss N1 Handles Your Privacy: On-Device Processing, No Photo Storage, Full Control

If you're considering an AI-powered nutrition tracker that you wear around your neck, you're probably asking a reasonable question: what happens to the data — especially the images — that this device captures?
This article explains exactly how the Odyss N1 AI necklace handles image data, what gets stored (and what doesn't), and how your health information is protected. No marketing spin — just the technical facts.
On-Device Image Processing: Your Food Photos Are Never Saved
The Odyss N1 uses a small camera to identify food during meals. Here's what happens step by step:
-
Detection: When the device detects an eating moment — or when you manually trigger a capture — the camera takes a single still image of the food in front of you.
-
On-device analysis: AI running on the device itself identifies the food items, estimates portion sizes, and calculates calories, macros, and micronutrients.
-
Extraction, not storage: The nutritional data (e.g., "620 cal, 35g protein, 28g carbs") is synced to the app. The original image is discarded instantly on the device. It is never written to persistent storage, never uploaded to any server, and never transmitted to any third party.
This isn't a "we delete it later" policy. The image is simply never saved in the first place.
What the Camera Does Not Do
Common questions about the N1 camera, answered directly:
Does Odyss N1 record video? No. The camera captures individual still images of food items only. There is no video recording capability.
Can the camera capture faces? No. The camera is positioned and optimized to capture food on a plate or table surface. It does not have facial recognition, detection, or analysis capabilities.
Does N1 record audio or conversations? No. There is no microphone activation during image capture. The device does not record conversations or ambient audio through the camera function.
Is the camera always on?No. The camera activates only during detected eating moments or when you manually trigger it. Outside of those moments, it is inactive.
Are images sent to third-party servers? No. All image processing happens on the device. No raw images leave the device under any circumstances. Only extracted nutritional data is synced to your account.
Privacy Mode: Instant Camera Disable
N1 includes a dedicated Privacy Mode that completely disables the camera:
-
Activation: One tap on the device button, or one toggle in the app.
-
Confirmation: Three independent indicators confirm the status — an LED light on the device, a vibration response, and a status display in the app.
-
Effect: When Privacy Mode is active, no images are captured or processed. Period.
How Health and Dietary Data Is Protected
The nutritional data synced to your app — calories, macros, meal patterns, health insights — is classified as sensitive personal information. Here's how it's handled:
-
Encryption: Data is encrypted in transit (TLS 1.3) and at rest (AES-256).
-
No sale of health data: Odyss does not sell, rent, or trade personal health information to third parties for any consideration.
-
No behavioral advertising: Health and dietary data is not used for cross-context behavioral advertising or targeted ads.
-
Purpose limitation: This data is used exclusively to provide the nutritional tracking and insights services you signed up for.
-
User control: You can access, export, correct, or delete your health data at any time through the app's Data Management feature.
Regulatory Compliance
Odyss's data practices are designed to align with:
-
CCPA (California Consumer Privacy Act) — California residents can request data access, deletion, and opt out of data sales (though we don't sell data to begin with).
-
GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) — Users in the EEA, UK, and Switzerland have rights including access, rectification, erasure, data portability, and objection to processing.
-
U.S. state health data privacy laws — Including Washington My Health My Data Act, Connecticut Data Privacy Act, and similar state-level regulations that impose specific requirements on consumer health data.

AI and Model Training
A separate concern from data storage is how AI companies use collected data to improve their models. Our position:
-
Default: no training on user content. Your food photos are not used to train AI models — they're never saved, so this is structurally impossible.
-
If this changes, we'll ask. If we ever want to use user-submitted content for model training, we will request your explicit, separate consent beforehand. You can decline without affecting any core features.
-
No health platform data for training. Data from Apple Health, HealthKit, Google Health Connect, or similar integrations is never used for AI model training.
-
Third-party AI processors are restricted. If we use third-party AI services to deliver specific features, those providers are contractually limited to processing content only for the requested function, not for model training.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is my data stored?Nutritional data (not images) is stored on encrypted cloud servers. Access is restricted to authorized personnel with a legitimate business need, and all access is logged and audited.
Can I delete all my data?Yes. You can request full data deletion through the app's Data Management feature or by contacting contact@odyss.life. Account-level data is deleted within 30 days of a verified request.
Does Odyss share my data with law enforcement? We do not voluntarily disclose user data to government entities. If we receive a legally binding request, we will notify you unless legally prohibited, and we will challenge overly broad requests.
What happens to my data if I stop using the service?Your data is retained for 30 days after account deletion to allow for recovery if you change your mind, then permanently deleted. You can request immediate deletion at any time.
How do I know Privacy Mode is actually working?Privacy Mode status is confirmed through three independent signals: the device LED, vibration feedback, and the app's status display. All three must agree on the current state.
