How Odyss N1 Handles Your Privacy: On-Device Processing, No Photo Storage, Full Control

If you're considering an AI-powered nutrition tracker that you wear around your neck, you're probably asking a reasonable question: what happens to the data — especially the images — that this device captures?
This article explains how the Odyss N1 AI necklace handles image data, what is retained after processing, and how your health information is protected. It reflects the current data-handling approach described in the Odyss Privacy Policy.
How Food Images Are Processed and Automatically Deleted
The Odyss N1 uses a small camera to support food recognition during meals. Here is the current processing flow:
-
On-device capture and temporary storage: When an eating or drinking moment is detected — or when you manually trigger a food capture — the device captures food images and stores them briefly on the device for processing.
-
Encrypted upload and screening: With your explicit opt-in consent for cloud-based food image analysis, images are uploaded to Odyss cloud servers using standard encryption. The server first screens for faces and non-food environments so that only food-related images proceed to analysis.
-
Cloud AI analysis and automatic deletion: Food recognition and nutritional analysis are performed in the cloud. After processing is complete, the original images are automatically deleted and are not retained long term. Extracted nutritional information — such as calories and macronutrients — is synced to the app.
This approach is designed to minimize image retention: original food images are kept only for the time needed to complete processing, then automatically deleted. You can also interrupt transmission at any time by enabling Privacy Mode.
What the Camera Does Not Do
Common questions about the N1 camera, answered directly:
Does Odyss N1 record video? No. The camera captures individual still images of food items only. There is no video recording capability.
Can an image include people or non-food scenes? The camera is designed for meal tracking, but an activated capture may include non-food scenes. Uploaded images are screened to filter out faces and non-food environments before food recognition and nutritional analysis. Odyss does not use these images for facial recognition or body analysis.
Does N1 record audio or conversations? No. There is no microphone activation during image capture. The device does not record conversations or ambient audio through the camera function.
Is the camera always on? No. The camera activates only during detected eating moments or when you manually trigger it. Outside of those moments, it is inactive.
Are food images uploaded for cloud processing? Yes. With your explicit opt-in consent, food images are encrypted in transit and uploaded to Odyss cloud servers for screening, food recognition, and nutritional analysis. Original images are automatically deleted after processing and are not retained long term. If third-party AI processors are used for a specific function, their use is restricted to that requested function.
Privacy Mode: Instant Camera Disable
N1 includes a dedicated Privacy Mode that completely disables the camera:
-
Activation: One tap on the device button, or one toggle in the app.
-
Confirmation: Three independent indicators confirm the status — an LED light on the device, a vibration response, and a status display in the app.
-
Effect: When Privacy Mode is active, no images are captured or processed. Period.
How Health and Dietary Data Is Protected
The nutritional data synced to your app — calories, macros, meal patterns, health insights — is classified as sensitive personal information. Here's how it's handled:
-
Encryption: Data is encrypted in transit (TLS 1.3) and at rest (AES-256).
-
No sale of health data: Odyss does not sell, rent, or trade personal health information to third parties for any consideration.
-
No behavioral advertising: Health and dietary data is not used for cross-context behavioral advertising or targeted ads.
-
Purpose limitation: This data is used exclusively to provide the nutritional tracking and insights services you signed up for.
-
User control: You can access, export, correct, or delete your health data at any time through the app's Data Management feature.
Regulatory Compliance
Odyss's data practices are designed to align with:
-
CCPA (California Consumer Privacy Act) — California residents can request data access, deletion, and opt out of data sales (though we don't sell data to begin with).
-
GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) — Users in the EEA, UK, and Switzerland have rights including access, rectification, erasure, data portability, and objection to processing.
-
U.S. state health data privacy laws — Including Washington My Health My Data Act, Connecticut Data Privacy Act, and similar state-level regulations that impose specific requirements on consumer health data.
For full details, see our Privacy Policy.
AI and Model Training
A separate concern from data storage is how AI companies use collected data to improve their models. Our position:
-
Default: no training on user content. By default, Odyss does not use your food photos to train general-purpose AI models. Image processing for the requested service is separate from model training or optimization.
-
If this changes, we'll ask. If we ever want to use user-submitted content for model training, we will request your explicit, separate consent beforehand. You can decline without affecting any core feature.
-
No health platform data for training. Data from Apple Health, HealthKit, Google Health Connect, or similar integrations is never used for AI model training.
-
Third-party AI processors are restricted. If we use third-party AI services to deliver specific features, those providers are contractually limited to processing content only for the requested function, not for model training.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is my data stored? Original food images may be stored briefly on the device and on Odyss cloud servers while processing is underway, then automatically deleted after processing. Extracted nutritional data is stored on encrypted cloud servers for service delivery. Access is restricted to authorized personnel with a legitimate business need, and access is logged and audited.
Can I delete all my data? Yes. You can request full data deletion through the app's Data Management feature or by contacting contact@odyss.life. Account-level data is deleted within 30 days of a verified request.
Does Odyss share my data with law enforcement? We do not voluntarily disclose user data to government entities. If we receive a legally binding request, we will notify you unless legally prohibited, and we will challenge overly broad requests.
What happens to my data if I stop using the service? Your data is retained for 30 days after account deletion to allow for recovery if you change your mind, then permanently deleted. You can request immediate deletion at any time.
How do I know Privacy Mode is actually working? Privacy Mode status is confirmed through three independent signals: the device LED, vibration feedback, and the app's status display. All three must agree on the current state.
